History Of The Garment
The origins of the shift dress lie in the 1920s when the short, usually sleeveless, shapeless and simplified dress allowed women to “shift” around, whether in terms of work, sports or dancing.
The company was founded, in Sneek, by brothers Clemens and August Brenninkmijer in 1841 as a Dutch textile company and by 1910 there were ten stores in the Netherlands. For many years, C&A retail clothing stores were a major presence in town centres throughout the United Kingdom.
