The first shawls were worn by Europeans in India and with the interest of colonies in Britain the shawl became a important item in womens wardrobe through 16th and 17th century, but ceased to be a but seated to be a fashion item from the 1870s, owing to the introduction of the fitted bustle style. However by the mid to late-1990s became fashionable again with pashmina, a cashmere shawl usually made in attractive, plain colours.
